Paint, Plants and Dirt

Oh what a beautiful day it was yesterday.
I just had to take advantage of the wonderful weather.

So outside I went
with empty Nesquik, beans, dog food, and tomato sauce cans,
plus 3 cans of spray paint.

Lime green, yellow and teal.


Spray, spray, spray.

It really is a good idea to take off your rings when painting.

I got so jazzed about doing this job that I forgot.

What is interesting is normally I do not wear my rings

around the house, just to much to mess them up.

We had plans to go out on Sunday, so put them on and forgot 

to take them off.     Sigh.  

Good news.....the rings cleaned right up, good as new!

So after painting my cans, and myself, I began to plant.

Playing in the Greenhouse

Oh my what a beautiful day it was today

I could not do anything but spend it outside.

Spinach, lettuce, sage, basil, green peppers, 

pumpkins, cucumbers, watermelon,

parsley and nasturtiums were planted.

Beds dug in preparation for 25 asparagus crowns

and 

Teal spray paint.

You must know that Teal has become a favorite color around here.

To most that may be no big deal, but it is here

because I am not a blue lover, except for my blue jeans that is.

So when I found Teal and realized I love it, well

you can imagine.  

Now I have Teal glasses for my summer drinks (well really any drink)

I also got these sweet spring colors when I bought the Teal

these are slated for a different project, but I will

just have to get another can of Teal paint, because

painting the planters was to happen today.

I also played in the greenhouse today and

hey there is another basket/planter....where is my spray can?

Got up to nearly 90 today in the greenhouse.

The tomato plants......just a few more weeks and they will go 

outside into the wine barrels in their wall-O-waters until such time

as the night temps stabilize.

Geraniums, petunias (these are hold overs from last year, I kept them inside

all winter and they are blooming again, I have calendula blooming for a second year as well). 

I have forgotten the name of this little one.

Next up, Catnip.

you can really see the square stem here, which means

catnip is a member of the mint family.

Well, now you know the deal with Teal.

I am glad spring is here.....

though I feel badly for all the folks who have been impacked

by the terrible tornadoes down south and on the east coast.

It has been a really rough 3 days on them.

Prayers for the families of those who died and

for those who lost property.

Spring come Spring..

I am so ready for spring, it keeps teasing...........now you see me, now you don't!

A few weeks ago I told you about the growing rack Kirk and I put together.
Now you can see how it is working. The plants are doing good. I am on my second
planting of some things right now (the things on the upper right).




















It has been nice enough to put them all out in the greenhouse for a few days, but the weather has turned cold again so they are all back inside. That bottom shelf is holding tomatoes, 6 of the 30 or so I have going. Lettuce in the OJ cartons and on the top shelf. Calundula's, marigolds and lemon balm next to the lettuce (second shelf).

Tnasy is going good out in the greenhouse, they look lonely without the other plants, it won't be
to much long and they will all stay out 24/7














I am thankful, we did not get any snow, everyone around us did. We do have alot of wind though, which is not normal for us, we live in a pretty sheltered area.

Work on the Homestead

What a busy weekend it has been. Yesterday we began the task of moving our wood pile to a new location. Might not look like much but that is about 3 cords. We moved all the large stuff up onto the top pad, then cut and split the rest. Needless to say we are all ready for next winter. LOL.














Here is the result. There is a small pile of wood still there, we can't decide where we want it, as this is the apple wood we use for the smoker. On the left is a big pile of rocks, that I moved from my old flower bed, which will become borders and walk ways. Now why pray tell, did we go to all this work? This area will become a new garden, with some small trees, flowers, herbs, shrubs and a strawberry garden....or at least that is the plan. I will update you all as I go along.














Kirk built the shutters I have been wanting for the front of the house. Since we have decided to stay here and add on we have begun to do some exterior design, adding little things here and there. I just love the shutters and they are just what I planned. Is anyone surprised they are green.....my favorite color, grin. I love how it goes with the tin and how the shutters dress the house.














Here is the porch. Look at that stack of wood.....yes we cut and stacked that, well 3/4 of it, the other 1/4 was left over from this winter. Now you can see some of the decorations we have added, the stove was what keep Kirk warm in the shop the first winter, now he has a pellet stove (we have come up in the world a little), it is now a flower stand. Remember to click for a bigger picture. We also put up the corner braces, license plates, some sleds (out of the picture), the hanging plants, etc. Rocky is sure getting big isn't he?














Now onto gardening. Just an update on the plant progress. You can see they are getting big. Some have been transfered outside and we are watching the tomatoes grow bigger, soon we will be enjoying our first fruits. We have been eating beautiful lettuce and spinach for over a month now.

And the tire garden is going strong. Lots of lettuce, spinach, chives, onions. It has been a busy weekend, I am tried. Oh I forgot we put flashing up on the roof line, I hate heights so that was not fun at all, thank goodness I only had to be up there a few minutes, though I think it took me longer to get back down, Kirk had to help me on the steepest part. Yikes.

Spring in the Green House

Spring has sprung in the green house. It is still not settled enough here in my zone 4 area to plant tender things outside. Though the onions and spinach from last year survived the -25 temps and are growing beautifully. I will be sure to plant more spinach to get a head start for next year.

On the bench in the picture below are, 6 kinds of tomato, lettuce- 3 kinds, wild mustard, tansy, nettle, marigold, calundula, purple basil, parsley, hosta, alyssm, Black eye Susan, Ech, chives, and more that I can think of right now.








































In front of the windows are some wine barrels for planting out the tomatoes later. My gardens are still in the 'someday' stage. With the building project and still having to haul water it is not something I can do just yet, next year (keep your fingers crossed). I do have two new beds up on the top pad and will be using it once the weather warms to stay and hopefully the wind isn't so fearsome later as well, it is blowing hard again today. We are so thankful no one was hurt when the shed went, will be glad when the weather calms (I hope).

Geenhouse Update

Yes! All the windows are now in. We were able make a trip to Billings for supplies, yippee. Now to figure out what we will do for the exterior. We are thinking rock. Below is a picture of the new benches on the inside. Still need to get power and water inside, it will come in time.






























At least we still have a bit of time before fall and starting fall crops, it has been over 100 for sometime now, we feel like staying inside with the cooler going. Ahhhhhhhhhh summer.

Update

Hi everyone, thought it was time to update you on what is happening on our little place in Wyoming. Last weekend Kirk got the sheeting put onto the greenhouse, this weekend he will add the windows. Working 6/10s leaves him little time for himself so I am very thankful when he takes the time to work on this for me.














It is wonderful to have the gravel out like this, up until a while ago this was a mud pit whenever it rained, now we can go from the porch to the garage without muddy feet.

I have been working on my little patch of garden, I have struggled do to envy....all the gardens in town are so beautiful and I want mine to be like that, but of course they are all established gardens and mine is new. Big sigh.














So here is what I have been doing. Have added some pots and some more rocks. The wine barrels have veggies growing in them (not fast enough for me mind you). One of my windmills is now in the garden and my big one is still laying on the ground because the wind keeps blowing it over, so once I decide where to put it we will have to anchor it down.















In this corner of the garden, up toward the top I put in some cornflowers, the iris are here too. The small pot has a tomato and the wine barrel has green peppers, I also broadcast about 5,000 red clover seed over the area.....I want green! LOL. The dump truck is one I bought for the grand kids and it reminds me of them when I see it.





















Here is my little garden angel, and under her watch are some sweet alysum and some marigolds. Poor little angel has been abused, Lady thought this was her own personal path until we got the little fence put up. You will also notice "finds" in the garden from our walks in the desert.

The following picture is of the area by the steps, just had to have a geranium. The wooden planter is about 25 years old, made while I was taking a horticulture class, just put some Tansy seeds in it today. That is it for now............................ Until later, God Bless.......

Geenhouse Update

An update on the greenhouse. Wahoo!! As you can see some of the walls are taking shape. LOL, I can hear you "walls" ...........yep those are part of the walls, the windows will go in the large upper parts and the bottom parts will get more studs. Ok come on down to the next picture and you'll see














Ok, so this view isn't helping but you can see the roof line and the interior of the greenhouse, what a wonderful day it has been, just beautiful (of course today- the day of this writing is not so nice). The window on the left is the kitchen window, sure changes things in the kitchen with the greenhouse addition.















Now you can see the front of the greenhouse and how it has gone together, with windows all along the front. It will make more scents as we go along. The door will be there by the dish and one more window on that side wall. Oh and you can see the tire planted which has onions growing in it. Ok more later, need to get back to those quilts for the quilt show.

A New Project

WAHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO..............my gravel is here. What a saga it was getting this gravel delivered, a month of frustration, but it is finally here so we can go on to building a
greenhouse.
The greenhouse will go in the corner there, the window is the kitchen so I will be able to look out into the greenhouse. It will measure 16x10.
I plan to follow this for you here, so stay tuned for updates.
